From Russia With Lavrushin

I’m excited to say that Russian National Champion and World Asihara Karate Champion, Alexander Lavrushin, made it into Philadelphia direct from Moscow last night despite the bit of weather we’re having. Alex is fighting hometown favourite, Chris Romulo in the main event this Friday Night Fights Jan 14. Check out the website because, aside from what promises to be an exciting main event, this is a STACKED card. As usual with the FNF’s NYC series I’m glad to be working there just for the chance to see such bouts from a fan’s perspective. Other news on the FNF’s front is that YOURS TRULY will be the main event March 4 (assuming I make it back from Thailand this time). Either way tickets for this Friday are available at Camp. We will be running classes as usual but I would like to see you guys at Friday Night Fights NYC Series if possible.

So New Year’s Day came and went and Camp is in full swing (no kettlebell pun intended). So aside from my own muay Thai bout March 4, J will be fighting in a full rules 8 man tournament in Calgary the following day Saturday March 5. This will be hosted and promoted by well known muay Thai fighter, Trevor Smandych (yes the one from Contender Muay Thai) so we know it will be well run and packed with talent. Trevor has promised to make sure I’m in J’s corner for the fights so it looks like I will be flying out directly from my own bout!

There are a lot of muay Thai and MMA events in which our Camp will be participating in the coming months and all of these will be posted on our website and plastered around Camp as well. However, we have a lot of exciting  non fight related news for everyone. First off I’m elated to announce that we will be hosting a women’s self defense seminar by Black Belt BJJ instructor and certified F.L.A.G. trainer, Sharon Bonewicz, of BJJ United. The seminar is scheduled for Saturday April 9 (she’s literally booked solid till then) @ noon at our Cool Hearts Muay Thai & MMA Camp in Northern Liberties. It’s a 2 hour seminar and cost will be around $50 I believe. Please tell your friends, sisters, girlfriends, wives, nieces, mothers, etc. It is open to non students as well and delivers some invaluable information for the world we live in. Check Sharon’s bio out @ bjjunitedflag.wordpress.com to get a better idea of why we are so happy to have her.

BEFORE that seminar will be another big and exciting event. Our first (though not MY first to administer by a long shot) Cool Hearts Muay Thai Camp Shorts Test @ the current location will take place Saturday March 26. As I mentioned in last blog there will be a pre-registration and I will hand select those who are able to be tested and those who do NOT make the first test are invited and encouraged to watch the test and be prepared for the next in a few months. I will have a test primer available online and also a printed copy to pick up at Camp. Be warned – the primer covers basics but there are always surprises. I will continue to update with details but here are a few:AT LEAST 6 months-one year training (no exceptions), you must have proper sparring gear (mouthguard, handwraps yes – but also, 16 0z gloves, shinguards, and headgear) which all fighters/advanced students should have. Don’t panic! Our account with Boon Sport USA makes it easy to get whatever you may need through Camp(shameless plug). Cost will be $75 but this includes the 3 hour test and the custom shorts you will have earned by passing (and likely your first pint on me afterwards) or tasty beverage/meat product of your choice for you non drinkers. Truth be told though I do hope to have post test celebration I won’t be drinking either as I intend to fight April 29 FNF’s as well.

This all just coincides with pseudo resolutions: 1)to become a man who needs no introduction (hey ladies…) 2) NO MORE FAT KID. Hopefully you’re all keeping up with pursuing whatever goals you’ve set for yourself this year, fitness or otherwise. On the fitness front I’d say ‘YES’ as classes have been packed and radiating good energy.

There’s so much more I’d like to say but it’s better busy than bored & I am not bored so time does not allow me to continue writing just now. Check back after this weekend’s fights to get an update and I will be keeping you all in step with me from Bangkok and Chiang Mai while I train there from the end of January-February.

Gotta run, see you @ Camp!

Ok, kids here goes. I know I have been slack when it comes to blogging of late but I plan to make up for that now. Handwraps And The Perils Of Quantum Mechanics

I was thinking about writing this student blog for the last week. What to write about? I thought about a few things I wish I knew when I’d first started training Muay Thai. As my Dad always told me when I was a teen, “learn from the mistakes of others, it’s cheaper that way”.

In my first year of Thai Boxing, I must have ruined or abandoned 5 pairs of hand wraps. In the beginning, everyone I know tries to throw them in the wash after each use and complains about the cat’s cradle-gone wrong that comes out of their dryer. There are epic sharing-sessions in the locker room after class about this very subject. People dread that maddening task of unraveling and rolling what looks like some deranged scientist’s physical model of string theory.

So here are a few simple solutions… Continue reading

Edwing Polche US Grappling Jiu Jitsu Champion

CONGRATULATIONS COOL HEARTS JIU JITSU

Edwing won the purple belt Gi division on US GRAPPLING submission only last saturday 13TH in Boothwyn-PA.

First match of 15 minutes he won by a choke from bottom half guard and that was the big surprise for his opponent and his coach that never expect a choke from that position.Second match of 25minutes after sweeps back and forward he got a smart kimura from the bottom half guard .Third match and the longest match of 45 minutes Edwing was calm and focused about his game,he knew that his opponent was heavier and stronger than him so he blocked all attempted submissions, frustrating his opponent that open his game for Edwing that got a quick foot lock.

I am proud of Edwing because he showed to everybody that we have jiu jitsu to compete against of the best jiu jitsu schools in Philadelphia and win.

COOL HEARTS JIU JITSU!We are building a strong JIU JITSU team too.
