This post is a bit overdue but I have been waiting on some important news before ranting about it in anticipation. The good news first? Ok, Cool Hearts ‘We Fight Sexy’ t-shirts & tanks will be delivered to Camp near 6pm tonight. We got an assortment of poppin’ colours & we have long sleeve, short sleeve, & tank top. Priced probably @ $25, $20, $15 respectively.
The bad news? Though J flew to Vegas Wednesday and had all of his medical & licensing requirements fulfilled he will NOT be fighting. His original opponent, Scott Leffler, cracked ribs weeks ago training & that’s unfortunate but understandable.
Leffler was replaced by, Shane Oblonsky, a young West Coast fighter who also has earned a pro title. Tuesday I received a call from the promoter’s publicist(as the promoter is en route back fr China & delayed by hurricane) saying that Shane Oblonsky is ALSO pulling from the fight. Needless to say, I was disappointed and concerned. As it turns out, Shane ‘did not feel ready’…
Honestly, I don’t know how this is even allowed to happen at this level. This was to be a professional title bout. Without a medical reason and a doctor’s verification, this is unacceptable. The word again? PROFESSIONAL. What we do is not the easiest career path but in the end, through all the love & passion & glory, it’s a job. Fighters FIGHT. I say this all the time. Whatever your occupation, especially in these lean financial times, someone offers work – you take it.
I don’t know if any fighter is ever 100% ready. If you train hard you incur injury, illness, bruises, strains, sprains, etc. So does your opponent! So it’s even playing field, yeah? The bottom line when those doubts enter is faith. A fighter that has faith in his Camp, his training, his dedication, himself(and all of this applies to HER/HERSELF of course), is able to beat back any shadow of doubt & stay in a positive light.
I wanted to write last night but on the wake of another long week of training/business/negotiating I was sore & stressed & exhausted so it came down to the old, ‘if ye don’t have anything good to say…’ Now that I’ve slept & am fully caffeinated I am just focusing on what’s next.
I was to fly out to Vegas this morning but that flight has been refunded to put towards Oct 2 in San Diego where(knock wood) J will be fighting for the IKKC title @ 140lb against the Champ fr Korea. He has also been offered a fight Sept 18 in Calgary against Nate Smandych. That cuts it a bit close but we all know J and Cool Hearts fighters- Working Class Warriors, yeah? The October fight takes precedence(better purse, better exposure, & it’s for a belt), but we may yet take both depending on parameters of the contract.
Point is, fighters fight, J may miss the fight Saturday but he is ready. We offered to fight anyone out there fr 140-150lb & still no takers. So I will be spending this weekend @ Camp taking it out on the rest of YOU! Ha! No, I’m glad to be able to train & not have the temptation of casino buffets all weekend I suppose. Gotta remain positive. I’m excited about T-shirts as well. & truthfully I know we still have a full bout schedule to deal with. I just hate missing any fight, y’know?
Ok, well now that I have that off my chest maybe I’ll get to the entrance music issue for my own fight as promised. I’ll try to post again tonight. I will say two things: 1) I have no idea of any of the songs thus far suggested 2) my own list ranges from ‘Sucker Punch’ by Savage Republic & ‘That’s It’ from me boys the Turbo A.C.’s to ‘Ready to Take a Chance Again’ from YES the incomparable Barry Fuckin’ Manilow. I don’t wanna hear it from all ye hard arses preaching tuff songs- Manilow STILL rules, ok? I am a card carrying member of ‘the Ultimate Manilow Collection’ . No shit. Just ask when ye see me ’cause I have the member card ALWAYS in my wallet!
Ok, enough for now Cheers, big ears!
